Sabado - Calificación
Schumacher y Alonso llegaban con espectativas de sacar ventaja para la última carrera de la temporada. Estaban igualados a 116 puntos pero con 1 victoria más para Michael que lo ponía momentáneamente al frente de la calsificación de pilotos. También era la penúltima carrera para Michelin y se especulaba la falta de atención al desarrollo para su penúltima carrera dejando a Bridgestone con la mano para llevarse el Gran Premio de Japón en beneficio de Ferrari.
La califiacación tuvo como primer ingrediente en la primera sesión, a los dos Red Bull que constantemente lograban llegar a la segunda parte. Los Super Aguri siguieron con su tónica y junto al Midland de Monteiro y Toro Rosso de Speed completaron los eliminado de la primera fase. En la segunda fase los que sorprendieron al no pasar el corte fueron los McLaren y el BMW de Kubica que, junto con el Williams de Webber, el Toro Rosso de Luizzi y el Midland de Albers completaron a los eliminados.
Para la última parte, la superioridad esperada de Bridgstone se hizo presente, no solo porque Massa y Schuamcher lograron el 1-2, sino también Ralf y Trulli en sus Toyota consiguieron el 3 y 4. La tercera fila la completaron Alonso y Fisichella, seguidos por los Honda de Button y Barrichello, para completar la quinta fila el BMW de Heidfeld y el Williams de Rosberg.
Domingo - Carrera
La carrera empezó tal y como se esperaba con Ferrari dominando y Alonso sólo pudo rebasar a Trulli comenzando una fila de procesión de 9 autos, incluyendo a Raikkonen que remontó 2 lugares en la arrancada. Estos autos llevaban un margen de ventaja de no más de 2 segundos entre ellos. Michael en una recta logró dar cuenta de Massa y se adueñó del primer lugar, pero sin poder sacar ventajas en segundos. Alonso, en cuarto se mantenia a 5 segundos del lider cuando por fin logró rebasar a Ralf por el tercer puesto.
Fernando y Renault tenían la misión de dar alcance a Felipe Massa para quedar atrás de Schumacher y ahí comenzó a sonreírle la suerte a Renault. Massa comenzó a tener problemas con su auto que lo obligó a hacer su entrada a pits 3 vueltas antes de lo previsto. Al salir, se encontró atrás de Heidfeld que iba con un ritmo más lento y cuando Alonsol, 2 vueltas después entró, salió adelante del brasileño.
La estrategia que mejor funcionó fue la McLaren para Kimi al hacerlo llegar al 4o puesto sin haber entrado a pits y logró descontar segundos valisoso para salir de su primera parada en la zona de puntos. Se especuló que podría terminar la carrera sin volver a entrar a pits.
Robert Kubica, que había tenido problemas en la calificación, trataba desesperadamente de llegar a los puntos y mantener su paso como un piloto novato con mucho futuro. Al reacomodarse los autos, Schuamcher iba en primero seguido de Alonso y Massa en tercero a muchos segundos de desventaja con respceto al español pero con confianza para retomar el liderto en el campeonato de constructores. Fisichella por su parte, había dado cuenta de los Toyota que demostraron, junto con Ferrari que la ventaja de Bridgestone contra Michelin en la calificación, no era tal en la carrera.
A falta de unas 15 vueltas para el final, se vino la desgracia para Ferrari, ya que después de 4 años, un motor les fallaba y precisamente fue el Schuamcher, que le llevaba 5 segundos de ventaja a Fernando después de su segunda parada en pits. Michael después declaró: "We are a great team. Our guys are the best and I have a great affection for everyone at Ferrari and am always more than satisfied in the way we work. Incidents like today’s can happen and they are part of racing. You win together but you also lose together. Today we did our best, I was leading the race and then my engine broke. That’s the simplest way to sum it up. That is Formula One. We can be proud of what we have achieved since Canada: we were twenty five points behind and no one could have thought we would be back in the fight for the championship, but we did it. Now we are nine points behind in the Constructors’ classification and we will do all we can to win this title in Brazil. As for the Drivers,’ it is lost. I don’t want to head off for a race, hoping that my rival has to retire. That is not the way in which I want to win the title."
Alonso así tenía la gran ventaja de llegar a Brasil con 10 puntos de ventaja sobre el alemán, pero Ferrari le pidió a Massa que alcanzara a Alonso para tratar de superarlo, sin embargo la diferencia de tiempo permaneció igual. Ahí fue cuando la última parte de suerte le llegó a Renault cuando Raikkonen, que iba en tercero, siempre sí hizo su segunda parada en pits y le legó el tercer puesto a Fisichella dejando a Renault con amplia ventaja en el campeonato de cosntructores
Raikkonen, que el próximo año corre para Ferrari declaró: "That was a good result for where we started the race, but it is not really good enough to be fighting for fifth place, and not what we wanted out of the weekend. The car felt a lot better today especially in the long runs, but our race today was lost in qualifying yesterday where we just couldn't get the speed out of the car that was possible." Al final, Renault logró el 1-3 con Massa defendiendo el campeonato de cosntructores y con una mínima posibilidad de que Michael logre su 8o título antes de retirase. Habrá que ver que pasa en Brasil, ya que nada está escrito todavía.

I took a risk to pass Jarno (Trulli) at the start, because it was the only chance, and then later in the stint I could see Ralf (Schumacher) was having problems - and I got a run on him into turn 1. After the second stops, I still thought I could win, because the gap to Michael (Schumacher) was only five seconds, so why not? Then I saw the smoke coming into turn 8, and I was watching the asphalt for oil. I thought it was a Spyker in front of me, and only when I went past did I realise it was Michael. After that, we turned the engine down, and just took things carefully to the finish. This win means a lot to the Renault team, and we have deserved it, and been waiting for it, ever since Hungary. The guys at the track, at the factories in Viry and Enstone, and at Michelin, have never given up all season. Now we feel confident for Brazil - but we are taking nothing for granted. The races are long, and you have to get everything right to make sure you finish in front. We have a good situation for the championship, but we will be racing the same way at Interlagos, to win."
2o Felipe Massa: "What happened to Michael (Schumacher) when he was leading is a great shame. I also had a problem in the first stint, with a puncture in my right rear wheel, which had led to a slow but gradual loss of air. As a precaution, the team brought me in for my pit stop three laps earlier than planned. I went out on track behind a slower car and that cost me my chances of staying ahead of Alonso and, as things turned out, of winning the race. We can still win the Constructors’ title, even if we know it is very difficult. For my home race in Brazil, I will give it my all to achieve that."
3o Giancarlo Fisichella: "This was a great result for me, for Fernando and for the whole team. But psychologically, this has been a hard weekend for me. My best friend ever Tonino (Visciani) died last Thursday, and it hasn’t been easy for me. I just want to dedicate this podium to him, and to say ‘ciao’. In terms of the race, the car was not bad and we had a good strategy, because I was able to pass the Toyotas at the stops. The Michelin tyres worked perfectly as well, and we had the pace all the way through the race. Now, we need to go to Brazil and be aggressive. The team is determined to win the constructors’ championship, and I want to make sure I get third in the drivers’ championship. So we will be aggressive, be focused, and try to win."
